In the United States an estimated amount of 600,000 people develop kidney stones every year, about 100,000 of them are sent to hospitals for treatment. Most people that develop kidney stones will experience their first incident between the ages of 20 and 30. This disease normally carries on throughout life.

Near the middle of the back, right below the rib cage is located our fist-sized bean shaped organs the kidneys. Now how many of you knew that? The kidneys have an important part they play such as to filter impurities and waste products from the bloodstream. When the kidneys remove this waste it passes on to the bladder through our tubes called ureter, this is where its excreted as urine.

Kidney stones happen when urine becomes too concentrated and substances in the urine, uric acid and calcium in particular, crystallize to shape stones. It starts as a small tiny crystal like particle and slowly grows in size, these stones maybe as small as a grain of salt or larger than a bouncy ball sometimes even bigger. Depending on the way theyve been worked, they could be round, smooth, pointy, jagged or asymmetrical. Most of the stones are yellow to brown in color, but depending on the chemical composition the stones could be produced as tan, gold or black.

For a person who is experiencing stones, the stones may stay within the kidney where most likely they wont produce symptoms. Symptoms happen when the stones break loose and start to move down the ureter causing strong pain. Normally the smallest stones with no jagged or pointy edges pass out the body with little resistance and no discomfort. Its the larger, asymmetrical shaped stones that cause horrible pain. Also, the ureter tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body could become lodged and in addition causing severe pain too. When a stone becomes lodged in the ureter it can block the flow of urine which than causes wastes to back up in the kidneys.

Some of the symptoms and signs a person could experience with kidney stones are pain, blood in the urine, urinary tract infection, and kidney failure. The most obvious symptom is intense pain this normally happens in the back area, just at the lower edge of the ribs on either side of the spine. When the kidney is passing through it also may cause blood in the urine. A urinary tract infection in some cases, the infection of the kidney may develop behind a kidney stone, causing fever, chills, and cloudy urine. When there is blockage of the ureter by a stone it could also prevent the kidney from doing its normal job of excreting salt, water products, and may cause temporary or even permanent kidney failure if its left untreated.

The kidneys play a big part in our bodies so take care of them and know there function and what could go wrong is important. Most people that go through having kidney stones wouldnt want to go through the pain again something that could help you is trying Renalis, it addresses diet-related kidney stone formation. As diet is an important component to general kidney function, the nutrients found in this product support healthy kidney function and may discourage stone formation.

Anyone can have a mental illness, regardless of age, gender, race, or income. Mental illnesses are more common than cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or AIDS. It is believed that one in five adults and children has a diagnosable mental disorder, one in every 10 young people age 9 or older has a serious emotional disturbance that severely disrupts daily life.and one in four families will have a member with mental illness. Children who develop depression often have a family history of the illness, many times a parent who had depression at an early age. Untreated mental health problems can lead to suicide, which is the sixth leading cause of death for 5- to 14-year olds. An estimated two-thirds of all young people with mental health problems are not getting the help they need.It is important to remember that mental illness occurs at any age, but most often appears for the first time between the ages of 25 and 44. With proper treatment, most people suffering from a mental illness can return to normal, productive lives, and almost everyone receives some benefit from treatment.

The causes of mental illness are complicated. Mental health disorders in children and adolescents are caused mostly by biology and environment. Examples of biological causes are genetics, chemical imbalances in the body caused by genetics, lack of sleep or poor nutrition, or damage to the central nervous system, such as a head injury, lack of oxygen in child birth and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Many environmental factors also put young people at risk for developing mental health disorders. Examples including exposure to environmental toxins, such as high levels of lead; exposure to violence, such as witnessing or being the victim of physical or sexual abuse, drive-by shootings, muggings, or other disasters; stress related to chronic poverty, discrimination, or other serious hardships; and the loss of important people through death, divorce, or broken relationships.

The following six preventive services are recommended and can be carried out in a clinic, church, library or local community center:

1. Prenatal and infancy home visits or support groups.

2. Targeted cessation education and counseling for smokers, especially those who are pregnant.

3. Targeted short-term mental health therapy.

4. Self-care education for adults (money management, relationship skills, stress management).

5. Mentoring and adult supervised after-school and weekend programs

6. Brief counseling and advice to reduce alcohol use.

Over the years I have found that finding good information is kind of like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The following links will take you to addictions and mental health sites that have the most current and useful information for addictions counselors, rehabilitation counselors, mental health clinicians, nurses and (of course) program administrators. All of the resources are FREE so you can order copies for your colleagues and/or staff!

Clinical Preventive Services in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Update: From Science to Services http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/SMA04-3906/ This report has been prepared to summarize the most promising preventive interventions of a behavioral nature intended to impact mental and substance use disorders, or in some cases, medical outcomes. This review focuses on prevention interventions that are primarily delivered by health care systems. Interventions provided in schools, worksites, communities, and criminal justice systems were excluded, as were population-based interventions.Clinical

Preventive Services in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Update: From Science to Services Special Report: Preventive Interventions Under Managed Care: Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/SMA00-3437/SMA00-3437ch1.asp Programs and services that prevent substance abuse and mental health disorders have the potential to lessen an enormous burden of suffering and to reduce both the cost of future treatment and lost productivity at work and home. The availability and accessibility of these interventions to the millions of Americans whose health care is provided by managed care organizations depend upon the services’ status as covered benefits.

More specialized sections address challenges that have emerged and gathered importance in the last decade: preparing a program to provide culturally competent treatment to an increasingly diverse client population and succeeding in a managed care-dominated world by diversifying the funding sources a program draws on.

TIP 45, Detoxification and Substance Abuse Treatment http://ncadistore.samhsa.gov/catalog/productDetails.aspx?ProductID=17398 TIP 45 provides lists and tables related to such topics as initial evaluation domains for clients in detoxification, guidance on assessment and rehabilitation planning, and the management of intoxication and withdrawal from specific substances or substance groups such as alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, and opioids.

TIP 44: Substance Abuse Treatment for Adults in the Criminal Justice System http://ncadistore.samhsa.gov/catalog/productDetails.aspx?ProductID=17183 Research consistently demonstrates a strong connection between criminal activity and substance abuse; research also finds that involvement in substance abuse treatment reduces recidivism for offenders who use drugs. This TIP presents clinical guidelines to assist counselors in dealing with problems that routinely arise because of their clients’ status in the criminal justice system.

Good resources for teachers and parents regarding mental health and addictions can also be hard to come by. Additionally, many parents have a hard time sticking with programs because day-to-day things come up—working late, homework whatever. The Staffordshire bulls are known for their great strength because of their sizes. Their variety is muscular and stocky but is also known for their agility. Surprisingly, this breed is one of the two breeds recognized by the UK Kennel Club as very suitable for children. Furthermore, their types ranked 5th when it comes to dog popularity in the UK, where the breed originated. Interestingly, Staffies are the only breed of dog that are “totally reliable” when it comes to standard of breed. The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about Staffies:

Category: Terrier

Living Environment: either indoors or outdoors

Coat: smooth (or silky like most terriers), dense, and short

Colors: black, brindle, red, blue, fawn; or any of these colors mixed with white

Height: between 14 and 16 inches

Weight: between 24 and 38 pounds

Colors: brindle, blue, black, red, fawn, white; or any of these with white

Temperament: aggressive towards other animals but very friendly with children

Health Issues: heat stroke, cataracts, and breathing problems

Care and Exercise Tips:

•    Bathe when necessary. •    Brush their coat only occasionally using a brush with firm bristles. •    Rub down their coat with a chamois or towel to remove hairs that are loose. •    Their physique requires a regular exercise routine which includes a daily play time while on a leash. •    They should be on leash while walking in public places. Origin/History:

The Staffordshire bull terriers, also known as the Staffies, are known to have existed around the 17th century. Since dog fighting gained a surge of popularity over bull baiting, it became a must to develop a breed of dog that is agile, strong, and has a more punishing head than the Bulldog.

In this light, fighting Bulldogs of that time were crossed with some terrier blood. The hybrid was known as the Pit Dog or the Bull and Terrier. The new cross breed became well known for their tenacity and courage, and despite their reputation of being furious with other animals they were excellent companions especially with children.

The Staffie pit dog became a favorite of steelworkers and miners alike. The breed also provided chain makers of the “Black Country” with extra income when worked against ratters or badgers.

The enforcement of the Humane Act in 1835 completely prohibited sports like dog fighting and bull baiting. However, a group of men in the Staffordshire chose to maintain their breed of dogs by introducing them to the show business.

Through the years, the breeders themselves changed the name of the dog into Staffordshire bull terrier to differentiate its physique from the English bull terrier. However, the name of the dog was officially registered only in 1935 by the American Kennel Club.

In 1938, a couple of Staffies gained popularity as Champions at the Birmingham National. The popularity of Ch. Lady Eve and were Ch. Gentleman Jim reached many established countries including France, Australia, Germany, Spain, Holland and even the USA. Since then, Staffies became successful as show dogs and were very popular as compared to other terriers.

The Stafford bull terrier, yes, has become a popular pet while still retaining reputations gained through generations of fighting dogs bred for tenacity, courage, agility, and most importantly, its reliability and great affinity with people especially with children.

And today you can say that the bull is not so bully after all! In fact, the bull is totally reliable as children’s pets.

Ensuring Proper Dental Care in Children

Do you know that seemingly simple dental cavities make children lose more than 52 million school hours every year? Just like adults, regular brushing and flossing are essential even for children to ensure proper dental care. And if you had been asking about the right time to begin the dental care regime for your tiny tots, the answer is simple – begin as soon as they develop baby teeth.

During tooth eruption, you can clean your tiny tots teeth using a moist cloth. With the appearance of more teeth, you can move on to pediatric toothbrush. Just apply a drop of any fluoride based toothpaste, no more than the size of a pea to clean their tiny teeth. Make the child spit extra toothpaste as the presence of fluoride can cause staining of teeth in small children.

If you, too, want your baby to have a shiny set of pearly white teeth, which he should maintain even as he grows up, then resort to ancient dental hygiene procedures. The secret to ensuring proper dental care in children is to establish a proper dental hygiene as soon as the baby teeth appear.

By establishing a proper dental hygiene, you will be able to avoid different dental problems, such as gum diseases, dental abscesses, cavities, or even tooth decay. These dental problems are extremely painful, which even make your pockets much lighter. Also, proper dental care is essential as a good set of teeth can impact the facial appearance of your child and also assist in proper speech development.

To prevent dental problems in your children and to ensure good dental health, some useful suggestions are as follows:

Look after milk teeth: You should take care of the milk teeth of your child as if they are made of gold. This is essential because proper baby teeth will ensure that mature teeth are developed correctly. To ensure proper development of baby teeth, it is essential that you provide your baby with calcium rich food, which is also needed for good dental health.

Restrict sugar intake: One should stay away from food rich in sugar, as it is detrimental to your childs dental health. Well, it is next to impossible to keep your baby away from chocolates and other sugar products. So the best way to feed them with sweets is during the meal. This way these sugary products will stay in your babys mouth for lesser time, thus reducing the risk of cavity development.

As far as possible try using sugar-free products and do not fill your little ones bottle with sugar, as it will have an adverse effect on his dental health. Also, abstain from juices that are loaded with sugar. Dilute the juice first and then feed it to your child using a sipper or cup.

Select suitable snacks: Make your kids opt for healthy snacks, such as fruits or cheese, in between the meals. This will not only provide you child with more nutrition, but also help build strong teeth.

Thumb sucking and pacifiers should be shown the door: Children should be discouraged from thumb-sucking or finger-sucking, as they can cause teeth deformities. Also avoid using pacifiers as they can push your babys jaw ahead and impact the growth of teeth.

Besides, to encourage proper dental hygiene, make your child select his toothbrush and mild flavored pleasant toothpaste. Also, ask your child to brush his teeth at least twice a day, which will help develop a routine in child. Take your baby to a dentist regularly to ensure proper dental health.
