If you’re like many women, you know that you need to exercise in order to have the body you desire, but you’re just not sure where to begin. And worse, you’re afraid of failure because you’ve started workout routines in the past and somehow never stuck with them.

I inserted a quote on my website which I absolutely love because it really is the key to success. Jim Rohn once said “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment”. Before starting an exercise routine it’s important to understand that discipline is really all you need to accomplish any goal you choose, whether it’s fitness, weight loss or a job promotion. Once you’re disciplined there’s no doubt that you will succeed.

To help you get started I’ve outlined some fitness tips that have proven to be extremely beneficial.

• Get Motivated—As with any lifestyle change, success is only possible if you are motivated to make that change and are willing to do so for you. Get yourself into the mindset that says “I can do this and I will succeed.” With the right attitude, failure is impossible and success is the only possible outcome. My former boss always told his employees to avoid using the “T” word: “Try.” When you say you’ll “try” to do something it really means you’re not going to do all that you possibly can to successfully reach your goal. Just know that you can do whatever it is you put your mind to, especially when it comes to getting fit.

• Consult a Physician—Generally, if you’re under 45 and in good health you probably don’t need to consult a physician before you begin your exercise routine. If, however, you are over 45 and have any type of medical condition it’s best to consult your healthcare provider prior to beginning any type of physical activity or exercise program. You’ll want to avoid doing too much too soon, as this may lead to serious injury.

• Join a Gym—By joining a gym you are making the commitment to become fit. Don’t say “I’ll start Monday” because there’s no time like the present. When you allow yourself the extra time to continue being a couch potato and make the statement that you’ll begin your exercise routine in a few days what you’re really saying is “I’m not motivated and I’m just too lazy to make a commitment. Period.” Go on the Internet and/or open a phone book and start calling local gyms in your area. Once you’ve visited these facilities and have found one whose equipment is consistent with your workout, join immediately and begin exercising that same day.

• Consistency is the Key—If you want results from your exercise routine you need to be consistent. In other words, attending your gym five days a week for the first two weeks, taking a week off and then showing up once or twice a week for the next two weeks will simply not bring results. Consistency really is the key to a successful exercise routine. Once you’ve made the commitment to become fit, you need to be present for that commitment. View exercising as if it’s a job—something you need to do. Or, look at it this way: if you need dialysis every single day of your life in order to live, you will make the time for your dialysis treatment. Why wouldn’t you do the same to be healthy and fit?

• Small Steps to Success—It’s so very important to keep in mind that every single accomplishment you make, no matter how small or large, is indeed another step toward your success. Your goal may be to look like a super model, but remember that it’s going to take a succession of small steps before you reach your ultimate goal. It’s best to measure your success with each small step or accomplishment you make because this will keep you motivated. In other words, if your goal is to lose ten inches from your thighs and you’ve lost a half-inch after 30 days of exercise, don’t think of this as a failure because it’s not; this small step has actually taken you that much closer to successfully reaching your goal.

• Be Properly Equipped—I can’t stress enough how much easier your exercise routine will be if you have the proper equipment with you when you arrive at the gym. Here’s a list of items you’ll want to have with you when you begin exercising.

1. A small hand towel for excess sweat
2. A pair of safe comfortable running shoes, preferably with a cushioned sole
3. iPod© or small music player (especially good for cardio workouts)
4. Comfortable, cool and stretchy clothing that allows for easy movement
5. Large bottle of very cold water
6. A positive “can-do” attitude

Stick with these tips and you’ll no doubt be feeling and looking exactly as you desire; you will indeed have crossed the bridge and found yourself on the other side – accomplishment – there’s no better feeling.

Reduced Gall Stones

The Harvard School of Public Health recently published a study indicating that drinking caffeinated coffee on a regular basis can dramatically decrease the incidence of gall bladder disease and gall stones in both women and men.

Reduced Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease

Two studies, one published in the European Journal of Neurology, have shown that individuals who drank about 2 cups of caffeinated coffee per day were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than individuals who drank no coffee or a small to moderate amount.

Reduced Risk for Parkinson’s Disease

Studies have shown that the amount of coffee and caffeine consumed could be inversely related to an individual’s likelihood of contracting Parkinson’s disease. This means the more coffee you drink, the lower your chances are for developing the disease.

Antioxidants and Cancer-Fighting Properties

Coffee is a powerful source of antioxidants – agents that combat cancer-causing free radicals. Coffee is chock full of the compound methylpyridinium, which can’t be found in many other food items and not at the level available in coffee. You can get antioxidants from both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as long as the beans are sufficiently roasted.

Increased Cognitive Ability

Studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers frequently score significantly higher on cognitive ability tests, spatial awareness exams, IQ tests, and short term memory studies.

The effects of coffee on an individual’s cognitive ability appeared to be more pronounced in elderly study participants and women.

Bowel Stimulation

Coffee is a stimulant and also a laxative. Some alternative practitioners even prescribe coffee enemas to stimulate the lower colon.

A recent study found that individuals who drank at least one to two cups of coffee per day scored significantly higher on memory recall, cognitive ability, logic comprehension and basic IQ tests.

So, the next time you’re guzzling coffee to get you through that late-night cram session, remember that it is doing a lot more than just keeping you awake.

Reduced Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

A study done by the Harvard School of Health found that men who drank approximately 6 8-oz cups of coffee, or 3-4 standard mugs could lower their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes by as much as 50 percent. Meanwhile, women could reduce their risk by almost 30 percent.

Remember, everything should be practiced in moderation, and health concerns should always be discussed with a medical professional. So, while a moderate amount of coffee has its benefit, an excessive amount can also cause problems. Heavy coffee drinking can lead to irritability, anxiety, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular problems and higher cholesterol levels.

How do you get rid of that fishy smell from the kitchen sink? Is there any way to stop your hands from reeking of garlic and onions after you have chopped them? What about that smell in the fridge or freezer that seems to leak out every time you open the door? There are a few secret weapons to busting these odors that not too many people know about. These weapons are currently at everyone’s disposal and are all located in none other than the kitchen itself!

 

One nuisance smell can waft out of your fridge or freezer, depending on what has been stored in there and for how long. Sometimes the smell may be too much that this may require a major “complete clean out and re-sanitization” operation. However, for the moderate smells, a very quick and easy solution would be to place some tea bags in the fridge. They work very well to absorb a lot of the food smells. Black tea bags are recommended for maximum effectiveness.

 

We all love seafood, but that fishy smell is one of the worst to eliminate after you have finished preparing the meal or washing the dishes. It can hang around your sink for days. One of the best things you can do if faced with this situation is to just take a break and have a cup of coffee! Percolated is good but Turkish coffee is best. I’m talking about that strong espresso coffee with the “mud” left in the bottom of the cup so thick you can stand a spoon in it! After you’ve enjoyed a shot of this, tip out any leftover brew all around the sink. Do this last after you have washed all other dishes – you want the coffee smell to linger in the sink for a while and not be washed down the drain. Allow five minutes before rinsing the sink to get rid of the fishy smell (longer depending on the intensity!)

 

A more common odor that originates in the kitchen and ends up on your hands is that of onion and garlic. This can occur on a daily basis when preparing meals. Who can deny that the aroma of these essential ingredients is heavenly as they cook, but their potent “raw essence” can remain on your fingertips for a long time afterwards. The trick lies in rubbing your fingertips or hands against your stainless steel kitchen sink. This kills the smell almost immediately. If it’s easier, use a spoon to achieve the same effect. In fact some companies who are on the ball have now begun selling stainless steel soaps for this very use!
